Critical Transit Infrastructure Work in Action – Pape Station, Ontario Line

It is always an absolute privilege to visit the sites of our members and experience the incredible work and dedication of everyone there to build the critical infrastructure that will shape Ontario for decades to come.

This morning, RCCAO Board Chairman, Peter Smith, and RCCAO Executive Director Nadia Todorova, had the honour of touring the cutting-edge work taking place by Keller and GIP at Pape Station as part of the Ontario Line development. Keller and GIP are proud HCAT members and conduct key work for infrastructure projects throughout Ontario. The walls being built at the Pape Station site will support future excavation to construct the new Ontario Line station that will connect with the existing station. The tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will launch from the tunnel portal site at 449 Carlaw Ave (about 1km south of the Pape Station site).

Diaphragm walls are very rigid walls that offer significant resistance to bending from lateral loads and are water-resistant. Diaphragm walls provide exceptional structural support, particularly in deep excavations and heavy foundations associated with subway tunneling. The wall’s robust construction resists lateral pressures, making them ideal for stabilizing soil and preventing ground movement.

On this job, hydromills are used in the building of the diaphragm walls. Hydromills continuously remove soil from the bottom of the trench, breaking it up, and mixing it with the bentonite slurry in the trench. The slurry, heavy with soil particles, is pumped through pipes to the desanding plant, where it is cleaned and returned to the trench.

The work on this project is essential for the building of the Ontario Line, critical transit infrastructure that RCCAO has consistently and steadfastly advocated for. It is imperative that we continue to invest, build and maintain critical infrastructure in Ontario and continue to lay the foundation for our province’s ongoing economic development and prosperity.
